Video deconstructions X2

Video Deconstructions X2

Now I have completed my shot list, I have a rough idea of what I would ideally like for my music video using the song: "Nina Nesbitt- Glue".  The next step is to once again look at already existing music videos to gain ideas about how I should present my music video and what generic conventions I need to include to make it look realistic. Unlike my first set of video deconstructions, I shall not be looking at the full music video. Instead I shall be deconstructing and analyising small sections that have some relevence to my ideas in my shot list. For example, similar themes, ideas, shots, ediitng techniques.

Acording to Goodwins theory of generic conventions of all music videos there is often interexttual referewnces within music videos to films, TV programmes, other gvideos etc. Therefore if I find any shots within other music videos or other short sections, it would be possible to take the idea and include it within my music video as it would be keeping to generic conventions of other music videos.

Universal Music Group Copyright Letter

After conducting some research I found that Nina Nesbiit was signed up to the record label 'Universal Music Group'. Universal Music Group is a American multinational music company and it the largest of the 'big four' record companies in the world. Universal music group is owned my the media conglomerate Vivendi. As Nina Nesbitt is signed up to their record label it means that Universal Music Group own the copyright to the song I wish to use for my music video. Therefore I decided to write a letter to universal which can be seen below to try and gain copyright rights.

Shot List Table

To begin making my shot list, I printed off the lyrics to the Nina Nesbitt song and listed my ideas around the lyrics. After this was complete, I had a general idea of what i wanted in each section. I could then start making my shot list table which is shown below. Making of my table started on the 19th of August 2012 and was finished on the 22nd of August 2012.

Shot List.

Shot List

Now I have learnt how to create a shot list, I need to create my own with my music video I am going to make in the near future. With the shotlist I can be wild and very creative with my ideas and create a perfect representation of what I would ideally like for my music video. The shotlist I create can then be refined later depending on what is possible and pratical. In my shotlist I am going to make sure I include several interesting camera angles and editing techniques aswell as animation ideas which can then be transfered to a final storyboard later on in the preperation process.

To begin my shotlist, I have already broken down my chosen song, "Nina Nesbitt - Glue" into timed segments which can be seen on the blog entry "Nina Nesbitt lyrics". The timed segmants can also be viewed below.  On my shotlist the shots and scenes need to be broken up by the use of numbers. Below I am going to split the lyrics up into numbered segmants for my shot list.

Shot List Lesson

Shot List Lesson

As a class, we spent a double lesson at the end of last term learning the importance of shot lists and also how to create them. Above is the sheet we were given demonstrating a pre-existing example of a shot list. It describes how first you can annotate your ideas around the lyrics of the song which have been broken up into timed segmants. Then a table can be constructed with the shot ideas, location, framing, action, dialogue or in my case lyrics, actors, props and any other notes about the shot such as editing ideas.

The task in that lesson was to create a shot list for a piece of music we had not previously looked at. We were given the lyrics to the song which was "Drive" by "The Cars". Different sections such as the verses and musical interlude were timed and the lyrics broken up into timed segmants. See below.
We then split off into small groups to create a shot list  for our given section. Our section was the middle third of the song which included the musical interlude. Together as a group we did create our own idea for the songs music video, as shown below.

Music Video Questionnaire Analysis

Music Video Questionnaire Analysis

I have now received 10 questionnaires back from my target audience. Like with my first set of questionnaires, Facebook proved an affective way to distribute my questionnaires and i received fairly quick replies from members of my target audience. I am now going to analyse the questionnaires to see their wants and expectations when it comes to a indie genre music video.3

3. Do you watch music videos?
100% of my target audience replied to this question with yes, keeping to my expectations of their viewing habits of music videos

4. How often do you watch music videos?
100% of my target audience viewed music videos at least monthly. Which means it could be a effective advertising tool to sell my music track as music videos are so commonly viewed by my target audience .60% said they viewed music videos more often than once a week which backs up this idea further.

5. How do you view music videos?
90 % said they used the Internet to view music videos with 1 participant saying they used TV to view music videos. This keeps to my expectations. The generation my target audience are in have grown up with the technological revolution of the Internet. Video sharing sites such as Veoh and YouTube now allow everybody to view music videos. not only on computers but on other electronic devices such as mobile phones, TV's and tablets. out of this 90%, 70% of them said they used YouTube as their preferred video sharing website to view music videos. This shows the dominance of YouTube as a online website in the modern day. This information is useful to me as it shows my music video would be better placed online than on a TV music channel in the modern day to optimise the amount of people in my target audience viewing the music video.

6. Have you every brought a music video? If no would you ever consider buying one?
Surprisingly, only 10% of my target audience questioned has previously brought a music video. I thought the figure would be higher than this but the purchasing of music videos through downloadable stores such as iTunes is still a relatively new innovation so it may have not caught on yet. 30% answered the second question with the answer yes saying they would consider buying a music video. This suggests there is some money to be made through music videos but generally video's are still seen more as a advertising tool for the song itself.

7. If a music video had a narrative running throughout it, would you find it more interesting to watch?
100% of my target audience responded to this question with the answer yes. This is within keeping to my expectations as it was one of the generic conventions of music videos that Goodwin's theory states. This confirms my ideas that my music video does need a narrative running throughout to keep my target audience interested in my music video and the song it is trying to advertise.

8. If a music video included animation such as Gotye's music video 'Somebody I Used To Know' would you find it more interesting to watch?
Ever since taking part in the animation workshop back in June, I have been considering the idea of using stop-go animation in my music video to make it creative and unique. 60% of my target audience responded to this question with the answer yes. This makes me more certain about putting my animation in my music video as I know the majority of my target audience like it. However only parts of my music video will feature animation to please the full 100% of my target audience, not just the 60% who responded with the answer yes in this question.

For both the questionnaires I conducted, my initial proposed target audience answered the questions to my expectations. Therefore I am going to make my initial target audience(primarily females but males too aged 15-20) my official target audience for my promotional package.

Music Video Questionnaire

Music Video Questionnaire
To study my target audiences expectations and viewing habits of music videos I have created another questionnaire for members of my target audience who have an interest in the indie genre to fill out. A copy of the questionnaire is displayed below.

I have decided to use the social networking site of Facebook to hand out my questionnaires. I have decided to use this new technology again due to it being very successful and effective as a device to distribute my first set of questionnaires.

Analysis of Generic Music Questionnaire

Analysis of Generic Music Questionnaire

To distribute my questionnaires I used the new technology of the social networking site of Facebook. I randomly selected 10 people who I knew where around my initial target audience range who were both male and female and had a interest in the indie genre so I could receive the most useful information. Using Facebook as a method of distribution worked well as it was quick and effective. I am now going to analyse the results of the questionnaire to see what information I can find from my initial target audience.

What is the most common way you view music videos?
90% of the people who completed my questionnaire said they viewed music videos on the Internet. Due to the young nature of my target audience they have all grown up with technology and use it every day. Because of this, this majority result doesn't surprise me and was what i expected from my target audience

How often do you purchase music?
The answers for this question varied widely from several times a week to rarely. The majority however responded that they brought music at least once a month.

What is the most common way you purchase music?
70% responded that they illegally downloaded music. Illegal downloading poses a real problem within the music industry as artists loose out on a large amount of money along with the recording companies and distribution companies. This large amount of illegal downloading within my target audience range also poses would be problem to me and my new artist if the music was to be officially released. The other 30% did purchase their music illegally with 10% using iTunes, 10% using another legal online downloading site and 10% purchasing music in shops. This symbolises how downloading music online from stores such as iTunes has replaced original shop album and single sales in the modern day due to the advances in technology.

If an album had a attractive digipack and booklet would you be more likely to purchase the album in a shop rather than download it?
I thought this was a interesting question to ask as it would tell me how much my target audience value the design of an album. On download stores such as iTunes you can download the booklet that comes with the album. However, as it is a digital version its not the same as having a paper copy.  60% answered the question with yes with 20% saying no and 20% saying I don't know. This suggests that one way I could try and combat the issue of illegal downloading is to create a attractive digipack and booklet to encourage the target audience to purchase their music in a shop legally.

Do you purchase music magazines?
Only 40% of my target audience that completed a questionaire responded that they did buy music magazines. This is a figure which is lower than i expected but it may be because of my sample.  However those who responded yes buy a magazine once or a few times a month suggesting that those who do buy music magazines buy them consistantly. I asked this question to link it with the next question to see the power of advertising in a music magazine

If you saw a advertisment for a new album in a music magazine would it encourage you to buy the album?
60% responded with the answer yes suggesting that advertising in a music magazine would be a successful way of promoting my new artists album. By advertising it may also decrease the amount of illegal downloads to promote profits from the new album.

Generic Music Industry Questionnaire

Generic Music Industry Questionnaire

I am going to create this questionnaire on the programme Microsoft Office Word so i can print off several copies of the questionnaire and hand them out to my potential target audience, males and females, primarily females, aged 15-20. I am only going to hand out these questionnaires to people that enjoy the Indie genre so I can receive useful information as the music genre I am focusing on for my coursework is Indie.

To hand out my questionaires I am going to use the social networking site of Facebook.  The new technology of social networking will allow me to hand out my questionnaires without wasting paper and allow for quicker responces.

Questionaires sent out on the 2nd of August 2012
